Job Description
Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is seeking and experienced multimedia professional for the role of Video Specialist Supervisor. This position manages a video team by providing training, coaching, mentorship and development. Ensures adequate coverage and equity in workload, as required, while managing team project assignments and multiple contractors. This role is a working supervisory role. The Video Specialist Supervisor provides training and oversight of a team of 2 Video Specialists and 2 Motion Graphic Designers as well as 4 contractors, while also contributing editorial, animation and 3D assets when needed. This role provides assistance to faculty and staff with all aspects of video production; from contributing project concept ideas through the editing and delivery of video projects. You must be able to work across multiple recording environments; studio and on location while maintaining high levels of production value. In post-production, the Video Specialist Supervisor should have competency working as an editor, animator, videographer and be well versed in video production pipelines. The Video Specialist Supervisor must also be focused on continuity of production value and branding across all video assets while bringing their own artistic vision to the final products.
As this role is part of a Teaching and Learning team, we are also looking for someone who is interested in growing their video skillset by learning how to develop VR as well as AR for learning. Reporting to the Multimedia Manager, the ideal candidate will have an interest in media technology and online education. You will excel if you are self-driven to dive into media production, comfortable balancing different priorities, and open to new challenges. We are looking for a creative, dynamic thinker with strong, writing and editing skills, and highly competent in most aspects of Video Production.
Candidates for this position should be prepared to provide a portfolio of work as a part of the interview process.
Note: While the nature of this position requires occasional field work, the modality is designated as hybrid (onsite 60% of the time). Additionally, the position will be required to travel to our facility in Washington, DC for occasional recording or supervisory needs.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership and Development [30%]
- Supervise and support full time video experts and contractors to achieve T&L goals.
- Train, coach and mentor supporting video experts to achieve established performance goals and objectives.
- Oversee work of Editors and Motion Graphics Animation professionals, allocating this resource to best fit the needs of the media team.
- Manage a team that may work across two campuses (Harbor East and DC)
- Manage staff project assignments to ensure all T&L media team needs are met.
Video Production and Postproduction work [20%]
- Consult and collaborate with stakeholders from production to post-production processes.
- Continuously discover and implement new editing technologies and industry’s best practices to maximize efficiency.
- Be part of the QA process for other multimedia team projects.
- Support interactive media asset production for multiple courses in development, revamp, or revisioning.
- Supports video production by setting up cameras, microphones, and lights. Assist in the video studio (setup camera, screen capture, and monitor recordings).
- Helps with studio equipment installation and maintenance.
- Accurately edits audio and/or video from script, development of both text-based and animated content.
- Ensures visual elements and quality standards are maintained across the entire video production process.
- Retouching videos, including color correction, graphics/animations, and timing music/sound to copy.
- Shoot video and record audio in-studio and in the field.
- Input music, dialogues, graphics and effects.
- Create rough and final cuts of video content.
- Ensure logical sequencing and smooth running.
Quality Assurance of 3rd Party Developers [20%]
- Reviews 3rd party content for quality and consistency as needed.
Learning Technology Promotion and Training [15%]
- Designs, develops and delivers training to introduce faculty, staff, TAs, and students to the emerging multimedia technologies and their effective application in teaching and learning.
- Develops asynchronous training materials around using video and multimedia objects.
- Create, develop, edit and implement new content for multimedia projects and ensure the continued growth, efficacy, accuracy, and timeliness of T&L’s web-based communications.
- Assists faculty in developing reusable learning objects (Videos, lecture capture etc.).
Motion Graphics Consultation and Collaboration [10%]
- Work directly with Motion Graphics Animator to develop new and innovative opportunities to translate ideas into engaging visual experiences.
- Collaborate with Motion Graphics Animators and contractors to elevate the quality of animation or motion graphics that are integrated into video projects
Research [5%]
- Keeps abreast of developments of related instructional technologies.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of lecture and screen capture tools such as Camtasia, Panopto, Kaltura etc.
- Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy.
- Exceptional customer service skills and client relations as it pertains to artists and stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Ability to keep track of event calendars.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Proficient in all aspects of video production, such as directing shoots; audio recording, mixing and editing; familiarity with video compression best practices and media asset management.
- Demonstrable video editing and animation competency with a strong portfolio
- Thorough knowledge of timing, motivation and continuity
- Familiarity with special effects, 3D rending and Virtual Reality using UnReal.
- Working knowledge of filming equipment (HD Camera, microphone, studio lighting, and teleprompter).
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
- Three years of related experience, with some supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university preferred. Concentrations in Multimedia, video production, related field, or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Ten plus year's experience in video production work.
- Experience with multimedia production, lighting, audio engineering & video editing.
- Experience utilizing video production equipment (cameras, lights, audio equipment) and postproduction software (e.g., Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Adobe Audition, Adobe Photoshop).
- Portfolio with relevant work experience and examples available.
- Experience hiring and building a multimedia team strongly preferred.
- Experience developing asynchronous training sites & materials.
- Experience taking concepts/ideas and creating multimedia content.
- Broadcast experience with digital technology and editing software packages (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, Media Encoder, Photoshop, Illustrator, Cinema4d, etc.)
- Experience with animation in either After Effects or Cinema 4D.
- Experience working with 360 camera footage, mocap, 3d scanning.
- Experience with coaching and training team members.
